PhD position at University of Gothenburg

The Department of Global Studies at University of Gothenburg announces a doctoral position within the field of migration studies. The PhD-student will be integrated into an ongoing research project on the new Portuguese labour migration to Angola and Cape Verde. Reminder: Call for papers “Exceptional welfare: Dilemmas in/of irregular migration” Deadline coming up April 25

Provision of Welfare to Irregular Migrants (PROVIR) will be organizing its closing conference “Exceptional welfare: Dilemmas in/of irregular migration” at the University of Bergen, 19th – 21th of November 2014. The conference will bring together researchers from various disciplines and geographic regions who are interested in the interplay between migration control and welfare policy.
At the conference, findings from the PROVIR-project will be presented by the research team. In addition to a number of distinguished key note speakers, we also welcome papers to be presented at workshops. Paper proposals (maximum 300 words) can be submitted until the 25th of April 2014. Please include a short bio with the abstract.

Yahya Hassen har ligget nummer ét på bestsellerlisten og har solgt sin digtsamling i mere end 100.000 eksemplarer. Men hvad fortæller digtsamlingen os om indvandrermiljøer i Danmark? Hvor nogle har set Hassans digtsamling som en øjenåbner, en insiders blik og et nødvendigt opgør med patriarkalske normer i dele af indvandrermiljøet, har andre  været mere forbeholdne, anfægtet generaliteten, og bekymret sig for, hvad Hassans fortælling vil blive brugt til af udenforstående. Nogle har derudover fæstnet sig ved, at der er tale om et litterært værk, og at grænserne mellem fiktion og fakta kan være uklare. Diskussionen har desuden ikke kun gået på Hassans digtsamling, men i høj grad også på receptionen heraf.  Hvor nogle ser politisk korrekthed og (opfordringer til) selvcensur i modtagelsen af Hassans digte, ser andre eksotisering af minoriteter, benægtelse af racisme og et bedrevidende majoritetsblik på minoriteters vilkår.
